online portfolio…yeah

March 24, 2011

I had to create an online portfolio for class last quarter, but decided to revamp it so I was more please with it! When looking for internships out of state, it is a lot easier to send them the link to my online portfolio so they can see if they’re interested in me or see potential rather than flying me to interview and finding out I’m totally not what they wanted!

Here is the link so you all wonderful people can help me find an internship 😉

spring break!!

March 16, 2011

It feels so good to be able to say I am on Spring Break. This past quarter was one of my favorites, I only had class twice a week and I actually enjoyed the classes I was in. Having said that, it was also a stressful one at that. I had multiple projects throughout the quarter that kept me busy. It’s such a sigh of relief to actually have a week or so without school work to think about.

I am sharing one of my projects I’ve worked very hard on throughout the quarter, a website for my brothers Hay and Straw business. 🙂

ice skating, websites, and SUNSHINE!!!

February 13, 2011

A few weeks ago, we had a huge ice storm. Our power went out, and I had the job of keeping the woodburner going so our pipes wouldn’t freeze. The storm brought at least an inch thick of pure ice with it, therefore our driveway was completly covered. My poor little s-10 (2wd) couldn’t make it out of the driveway so I decided to make it fun! I strapped on my mom’s thirty year old ice skates and made my way to our driveway, and proceeded to ice skate down our driveway. The best part was I didn’t fall!!!!! Here are a few pictures (sorry about the poor resolution, a crappy free phone can only take crappy pictures) 🙂

more recently, I purchased the latest version of photoshop/dreamweaver/indesign/etc. I have been designing a website for my brothers hay and straw business for a class, and am excited to share it with you once it is complete! I’m getting first hand experience with working with a customer. It has been a bit frustrating redoing the site three times to meet my expectations, and having to redo it yet again to meet my brothers.

It is finally beginning to not feel so dreary during the winter, the sunshine is out and melting all the snow! It has to be at least 40 degrees outside!! I’m going to find something to do involving being outside! 🙂

Casey & Grandpa Deans Story 12-19-92

January 17, 2011

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Casey who was three years old. Casey has a big brother named Oscar. Oscar has two heads and six eyes. Oscar goes to school. He is in the 11th grade at Big Walnut. Caseys big brother Oscar is a basketball player. He is the star of his team. Do you know why? He is the star because he has 6 eyes and therefore can see everything going on in the court at the same time. 12-19-92

This is a story I wrote with my Grandpa Dean when I was three years old. I was cleaning up my desk area and found this! It’s almost been a year since he’s passed away, and I don’t go a day without thinking about him! I love you Grandpa, and I will always treasure our memories!

**In case anyone was wondering, yes I do have a big brother, but his name is not Oscar, and he does not have two heads and six eyes. 🙂 **

The Victoria’s Secret Catalog never stops coming

December 31, 2010

Earlier in the week, I took my dad to donate blood. It was incredibly busy, so I decided to walk over into a nearby bookstore while I waited for my dad. I had been craving to read something inspirational, and upbeat during my hiatus of textbooks. I searched the shelves under every genre, and just as I was about to give up I spotted a light pink book entitled, “The Victoria’s Secret Catalog never stops coming and other lessons I learned from breast cancer” While this book wasn’t necessarily “upbeat” it was sure to be inspirational. The title caught my attention, and I quickly sat in a big oversized overly comfy red chair and began to read. I couldn’t put it down, and before I knew it I was on page 28! I decided I better buy this book.

The only person I knew directly that had had breast cancer was my grandma mary, I was too young to understand what she was going through, but I began to understand what every woman who finds out they have breast cancer goes through. And it sounds sort of corny, but I felt closer to my Grandma after reading this book.

The message I liked most about this book, besides the raw honesty, is the author Jennie Nash’s approach about the matter. Of course it was painful, but she decided to use her experience and share it with anyone and everyone and found that if you share this intimate detail about yourself, you find that you aren’t the only one going through this. She often heard friends and family tell her stories of people they knew that had breast cancer, and although not all the stories had a happy ending, it became somewhat comforting to know there is other people out there going through the same thing.

I think this message can be used for everyone. Whether it be a blog, book, phone conversation, email, facebook, twitter, support group. As long as you are getting your experience out there, you will find someone going through the same thing, and that in itself is comforting that you don’t have to go through something alone.

with love,

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…

December 27, 2010

As I sit here and blog, if you couldn’t tell by the blog title…I am sitting in my living room near the picture perfect fire (made by yours truly) in the fireplace (pictured below) while I wait for my homemade bread to rise. 🙂

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays, family, friends, and time off! I know I am loving not stressing over projects and homework.

As I sit here by the fire, I can’t help but think of how peaceful and relaxing it is just to simply sit by a fire with my family. In the world we live in today, it is so fast-paced, that we feel unproductive or lazy if we stop to just enjoy the simple things in life. I think it’s important to as some say, “stop and smell the roses” You never realize what you overlook, until you take the time to truly appreciate everything that surrounds you.

One of my favorite quotes is, “There is more to life than increasing its speed.” –Gandhi

I desperately want to travel the world, but until I get the chance, I think I am going to travel Ohio. There is so much to see throughout Ohio, that I have never been to a lot of it and would really like to take the time to enjoy what Ohio has to offer.

So stay tuned for blogs about my travels throughout the great state of Ohio! 🙂

-Happy New Year!!!-

Busy Bee!!

December 15, 2010

I have been a busy bee lately. I haven’t been home for more than an hour besides to sleep in almost two weeks. The holiday parties have slowed down, and so has work. I now have some time to blog 🙂 Autumn quarter ended well. I didn’t have any finals during finals week, which was nice. I had three projects all due within the same which, so I’m not sure which was worse?

As I look back on this past quarter, I like to reflect on what I learned, and what I wish I would’ve learned. I learned a lot about AP style, and gained great experience as a journalist. I enjoyed writing the news stories, and profile stories more than I thought I would. I also incorporate AP style into my text messages, e-mails, blogs, tweets, and facebook statuses 🙂 I also learned a lot about print design and when I look at an advertisement or magazine I critique the design aspects of it in my head. I point out what I like and what I don’t like about the design, and how I would have designed it differently. I also find myself using some marketing, and thinking about who businesses targeted markets are.

I know that I have learned something when I’m incorporating it into my daily life. I also know that I am in the right major, when I actually enjoy what I’m learning, and look forward to my projects. Not to mention that they are a great addition to my portfolio!

Although I’m done with college for the year, I’m not done learning. I’m taking a bartending class so I can become a professional mixologist. I enjoy interacting with various people, and it’ll be a way that I can only work a few days a week, and still be able to pay for rent! I highly encourage everyone to consider taking bartending classes, even if it is just so you know what to order when you go out to the bar!

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to clean out my closet…I think it’s slightly a problem when you can’t walk into your walk-in closet because you have so many clothes 🙂

Happy Holidays!!

Sewing with Sandy

December 2, 2010

Well, it may be less than 12 hours before my final project is due, but I’m happy to report I am done. I think I enjoyed this project more than anything else in the class. I think it had a lot to do with my story, and it was actually a lot of fun to report on.

My hairstylist sells these cute market bags one of her clients makes. Sandy Leymaster, the lady that makes the bags didn’t intend on making them to sell, in fact she originally made them as a gift to her family and friends. She gave one to my hairstylist, and so many people asked about them that Sandy started making them to sell.

I wanted to write a feature story on Sandy and how she got into making and selling the bags. I contacted Sandy, told her about my project and how I wanted to write a feature on her, she was really excited and invited me to her house to see her sewing room and also so I could interview her. It didn’t seem like a interview at all, we just had a nice chat. She reminded me  a lot of my grandma, and was so kind. I think that’s when you know it’s going well, when it seems like more of a conversation than an interview. I opted just to take pictures of her projects, instead of videotape her, because she didn’t seem like she really wanted to be videotaped, and I didn’t want to make her feel like she had to, plus I wasn’t sure how to videotape it and edit it anyways.

I wrote a news article, that I hope to publish in the local newspaper, and I made a audio slideshow showing pictures of her bags, and explaining briefly about Sandy.

Overall, I am very pleased with my audio slideshow, and my paper. I think it’s the best I have done in the class, let’s just hope the teacher thinks so too 😉

Happy Holidays!!

random ramblings…

November 2, 2010

We get a few minutes before class starts to blog…the problem is I don’t want to be forced to blog when I don’t have anything to say. No one wants to read about how I was stuck in traffic on the way to class this morning, or how I am going to be late for work, because my boss scheduled me to work before I’m out of class. No one cares about my many complaints about the world we live in.I don’t like listening to complainers, so why would I want to read about them? I don’t like being made to do things such as blog, just as much as I don’t like to be forced to read something.  I see what my teacher is trying to do, get us to blog regularly and be familiar and updated with the latest social medias and types of news multimedia. I just don’t get it, when I have nothing of value or substance to say.

Will work for an Internship

October 28, 2010

I have been struggling to find an internship. I ran into a group of people that worked in Telecommunications at a golf course I work at, and they told me I should consider interning with then. I took their business card, e-mailed them my resume and have yet to hear back. I have gotten a few e-mails from my adviser, and I e-mailed them my resume and they have yet to respond with any good news. I find it discouraging. I know times are tough, but I’ve had a few interviews for internships in the past, but didn’t get hired because I don’t have experience. Isn’t that the point of an internship to gain experience?

I saw a few job postings at Express and The Limited for a photo editor and a web developer. Those are the kinds of things I want to get into. I looked for an internship within one of those companys, and found nothing.

In my design class we are learning how to use Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign. It is so amazing how many things you can do with these programs. Every time I sit down and work with those programs, I am amazed in what else I figure out how to do.

In my news class, our final project we are able to utilize video and sound into it. I have played around with Windows MovieMaker, and since I got my new MacBook, played around with iMovie and a few other programs. We had a speaker come in and give us great advice and a ton of websites to visit that are free that will give you tutorials on how to use certain programs and free downloads to make videos and slideshows. I also learned that we as OSU students are able to use video cameras, tripods, headphones, microphones, etc. anything that we will potentially need to make a video for our final project. How cool is that?!

So if anyone is out there that knows of a possible internship within the design realm, I would be very interested.  😉
