meetup.com : online dating or to find friends?

March 15, 2013

I find it fascinating to talk to other people and hear their story on how they wound up in Chicago. For some, it’s school or they have always wanted to live here and for others (like me) it was for a job. I think it’s really neat to talk to people about their stories thus far. I find it inspiring and opens up my eyes to what is out there in the rest of the world.

On my quest to find friends. (I sound so pathetic–but it’s true) I heard about this website called meetup.com I was very skeptical when I first heard about it, because it sounded like a dating website. After I asked a few questions and searched online, I found it to be a really cool way to meet people with the same interests.

You sign up, and search topics that interest you, such as “books” “running” or “line dancing” and it comes up with groups people have made. These groups usually revolve around a common interest whether it be the love of reading or just moved and looking for friends. Then the members of the groups post events, I’ve seen some be all fancy white tie affairs and others be hey we’re meeting up here to go run and then have brunch, show up if you can.

I have yet to actually attend any of these “meetups” but I had to share! Upon further investigation I have decided it is a safe way to meet people. Most of them are held in public places and with common interests so you connect with people on a much deeper level than if you had met them at a bar.

I’m excited to try this out! I will keep you posted on how it goes. 🙂
